The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) – and he is the leader (sayyid) of the truthful (as-saadiqeen) – said “There will not cease to constantly be a group from my Ummah steadfast on the commandments of Allah. They will not be harmed (in any way) by those who abandon them, nor by those who oppose them. This will remain their condition until the order of Allah (amrullah) arrives.”
– This hadith has been related by al-Bukhari (and many other collections) on the authority of Mu’aawiyyah (may Allah be pleased with him). This hadith is “agreed upon” (meaning it has been collected by both al-Bukhari and Muslim). It is considered – not only sound (sahih) but – mutawaatir (widespread); which means it shares a level of authenticity equal to that of the Qur’an. Therefore, to deny or reject this hadith takes that person out of al-Islam.
In this hadith, “order of Allah (amrullah)” is referring to the time of death or the “Last Day”. The scholars have expressed many different opinions regarding the identity of this group. To sum up, they are as follows: the experts of hadith (al-muhadditheen), the fighters in the way of Allah (al-mujaahideen), the teachers of the deen (al-ulamaa’), the protected friends of Allah (al-awliyaa’), or no one specific category or grouping of Muslims, but any number of group or groups containing all of the above mentioned leaders.
We must keep this hadith in mind when we become depressed or frustrated regarding the apparent state of affairs of the Muslims. To believe that all of the Muslims are astray, wrong, backwards, loosing or failing to establish the deen of Islam, is to contradict or disagree with this statement of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). Our condition may seem bleak and gloomy to many of us but this is due to the fact that “THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED” – so to speak. Just because we may not see or be aware of groups of believers who are holding tightly to the deen doesn’t mean they don’t exist!
This should be a sufficient dose of medicine to cure any true believer who may become infected by the disease of depression or frustration stemming from current state of affairs in the Muslim community. Success is with Allah!
