I actually didn't realize until last night, while teaching from the works of Shaykh Uthman Dan Fodiyo (may Allah have Mercy on him), that the 12th of Rabi ul-Awwal and December 25th coincided!
The 12th of Rabi ul-Awwal is thought by many to be the birth date of the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The 25th of December is alleged to be the birth date of Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus - the son of Mary).
The truth of the matter is that we know for a fact that the Prophet died on Monday, the 12th of Rabi ul-Awwal in the 11th year of hijrah. Rabi ul-Awwal is the 3rd month of the Islamic/lunar calendar.
However, the only thing we know for certain regarding his birth is that he was born on a Monday, during the year of the elephant (check your Seerah for the meaning of the year of the elephant).
There are many opinions supporting Rabi ul-Awwal as the month of his birth. There are some opinions supporting other months - like Ramadan - for his birth.
There is also no ijmaa' (concensus) supporting the 12th as the date of his birth! There are many opinions which support other days like the 2nd, 8th, 10th, and 17th of Rabi ul-Awwal.
It is also well-known amongst Muslim and Christian scholars that Jesus was not born on December 25th nor was he born in the winter! It is well-known that Christmas is actually a pagan holiday!
What I have just mentioned is well-known among our scholars, but it didn't stop the evil ones from among them from using this opportunity to trick their sincere followers into celebrating Christmas "through the back door" - by connecting it to the birthday of the Prophet!
Some of the ulamaa us-suu' (evil scholars) didn't even stop with the evil paganism of Christmas! They have taken it a step further by celebrating Kwanzaa - a man-made holiday concocted by one who many people in the black power movement consider to be an FBI agent!
We should not be sad at all because we don't worship personalities! We love the truth and refuse to act contrary to it! This is actually good news because now we know who is who!
The line has been drawn in the sand! Alhamdulillah!
